Carry out sterility testing of turbid biological products using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Alternate Thioglycollate Medium when Fluid Thioglycollate Medium is not suitable due to its viscosity. Earlier Brewer demonstrated that anaerobic growth could be stimulated in a broth1 however Marshall, Gunnison and Luxen reported that this medium neutralized the bacteriostatic effect of mercurial compounds2. Alternate Thioglycollate Medium conforms with the specifications of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP)3.

Carry out sterility testing of turbid biological products using Alternate Thioglycollate Medium when Fluid Thioglycollate Medium is not suitable due to its viscosity.
- Conforms with the specifications of USP3.
- Agar is omitted from the medium to decrease its viscosity.
- Sodium thioglycollate and L-cystine are incorporated as reducing agents
This medium contains casein peptone and yeast extract that provide nutrients to support the growth of a wide variety of microorganisms. Sodium thioglycollate and L-cystine are incorporated as reducing agents which maintain a low oxygen tension in anaerobic medium. Dextrose is the energy source.
